Sales Information
From the Ata Mara vineyard on the Wanaka Cromwell highway, a cool site on the heavy clay soils that Pinot just loves. Late ripening, the fruit gets a wonderfullylong growing season allowing plenty of time for flavour development; Pinot hates being rushed. The grapes are handpicked from several different clones with each clone individually batch-fermented to allow plenty of blending options.

The wine is vinified with a light touch and barrel matured with a relatively small portion of new oak, ensuring the wine is primarily about fruit and site expression. On the nose there is warm cinnamon spice, black Doris plum, black cherry, wild thyme, lavender, violets and spiced whole-bunch lift; on the palate, it's smooth and silky with a beautifully textured and integrated framework of tannin and acid with a juicy succulence - raspberry, cherry and rhubarb - that is hard to resist. Drink on release and over the next 3-7 years.
The Vineyard
Ata Mara is a small New Zealand estate dedicated to producing elegant and appealing Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines from south island Central Otago. Husband and wife David Pratt and Janiene Bayliss started the venture 20 years ago as part of a leisurely retirement plan, possibly without realising the work involved!

The vineyards extend to 20 hectares, on the terraces between Lake Dunstan and Mount Pisa, due east of Milford Sound and Queenstown if you're lucky enough to have visited the area. This is the most southernly point on the planet that grapes are grown commercially but the conditions are perfect for cool climate varietals like Pinot. The land is flat with low fertility alluvial sandy soils interspersed with extensive gravel pans rising to the surface across much of the vineyards. Hot days in the valley countered by cool nights, followed critically by a cool autumn, ensure slow ripening of these most fickle of varietals, and a resulting quality to rival Burgundy.
