Lots to enjoy here: ebullient fruit - loganberry, blackberry, orange - and sunny southern herbs like rosemary and lavender, married with a delicious milk chocolate richness. Gorgeous warmth, generosity and finesse.

Nice barbecue wine or partner for roast pork with crackling.

The blend here is 50% Grenache (the southern Rhône is Grenache country), 25% Syrah and 25% Carignan. Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages is one rung up from Côtes-du-Rhône on the Rhône wine hierarchy - bit confusing, but then this is France. The vineyards are actually very close to those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with much the same terroir (pudding stones etc), which helps to explain the brilliant depth and concentration of Maucoil's wine.

The Vineyard
Château Maucoil has a long history stretching back to Roman times, when the property was used as an army fortress. Its most-recent incarnation began in 2013, when Château Maucoil was acquired by Lavau, a local family wine negociant. The estate spans 37 hectares, most of which is employed to grow a wide range of traditional grapes for red Châteauneuf du Pape. In 2014, Château Maucoil became certified biodynamic.
