Full-throttle style, with sweet-fruited berry aromas spiced up with oak-derived notes of chocolate and pine. The unctuous wash is loaded with mouthcoating flavours of blackcurrant jam, mocha and melted liquorice, supported by fine tannins and bright acidity. Luxurious stuff! Allow to breathe and sip on its own, with hard cheese or alongside a fine fillet steak in a balsamic reduction.
The Vineyard
Château de Jonqueires, an ancient domaine, is owned by Val d’Orbieu, a Narbonne-based wine group that has grown since its inception 40 years ago to become one of France’s largest and savviest. So seriously does Orbieu take its craft that head winemaker Olivier Dauga actually wears a blindfold - to heighten his senses, he says - while tasting and selecting for final blends. 'Cuvee Eole' is a blend of 59% Grenache and 41% Syrah, fermented traditionally and matured in barrels of varying ages and origins. Red wines - famously rich and herb-scented, made from Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan - are the forte of popular appellation Corbières. The region covers a large, square area, 60km wide, to the south and west of Narbonne. The terrain and climate vary significantly, ranging from breezy Pyrenean foothills to hotter coastal plains. Hence the zone has been divided into sub-appellations, and these can add their names to the label.
